As always, its time for another Follow Friday. This wonderful meme is hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. Each friday two blogs are featured in an effort to expand one's blog. Go and check out both of these sites to learn more!
Question: In light of 11.11.11 and Veteran's Day tell us about your favorite soldier and how he or she is saving the world. Fictional or real life.
Its a strange realization, but I've only known one soldier my entire life, and I regret to say that I hardly knew him at all. My grandfather was in the Navy for almost his entire life and served on bases all around the world. Most notably, he fought at the Bay of Pigs Invasion when the US tried to invade and overthrow the Castro dictatorship in Cuba. It breaks my heart knowing that I don't have any solid memories of my grandfather, he passed away when I was barely three, but I cherish the stories I've heard about him both as a man and a soldier. So, I see him as my favorite hero, but consider all the men and women serving or who have served in the military to be heroes and have the deepest respect for the sacrafices they have made.
Ok, so I totally didn't mean to go all sentimental over here! I would love to hear who you all wrote about for this post! Send me your links in the comments. Happy Follow Friday!
I have a feeling everyone is going to be sentimental over this follow me friday!! Great post!

My 2 grandfathers were the only soldiers I knew, also. I loved them both, but I had a lot more time with them.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your grandfather was an amazing man.

Hello! New follower here. The only soldier I 'know' is my great grandfather who was shot down during WW2. I don't have any memories of him but I'm still very proud of him. If you'd like to pay me a visit I'm over at:

My grandfather was US Navy, too. I have many other relatives who have passed on who served, but like you, I don't know much about them. I hope someday, through the power of genealogy, I can find out. :)

Having wonderful stories passed down to us and that we can then pass down ourselves is a beautiful thing! That is what keeping someone "alive" is all about!

Thanks for sharing! Great answer!
ReplyDeleteSome people have friends and/or family who served or who is serving in the military. Other people aren’t really keen on the long-standing war and really have no answer at all.
ReplyDeleteAs for me? I don’t know anyone who is serving or who has served so I decided to go with what I want and chose a fictional soldier as an answer. The thing is, I had four prime candidates! I did eventually end up with one with a lengthy explanation. Care to know who it is? Follow me back to http://www.howardsherman.net and find out!
In celebration of today’s cool date of 11/11/11 I’m offering a special $11 discount off all my interactive fiction books! Sure I’m a book blogger but I’m also an author. All the details of the $11 off on 11/11/11 is at the bottom of my Follow Friday blog post.
Since I’m posting this kind of late just add 'FF’ to the coupon code and it’ll be valid all weekend long!
Thank God it’s Follow Friday!

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that you didn't get to spend much time with your Grandpa but from what you've said he sounds like a really amazing person! I got a bit sentimental when I wrote my post too but I'd imagine it's hard not to when you're talking about someone co important to you :)
Have a great weekend!

My Dad was in the Navy too :) During WW2. He had me l8 in life. It was cool having an "old Dad" he was a bit strict but that was ok now that I look back on it.
