Follow Friday (14)

Hey everyone, its Thursday night and time to post up another Follow Friday! Follow Friday is hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee and features two up and coming book blogs along with a book related question or post. The purpose of this meme is to encourage new followers and blogging friendships. This week the question is...

Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

I like to think of myself as an eclectic reader that'll give anything a try. I'm really not that picky of a reader- as long as the book interests me. However, I'm not much for autobiographies or biographies. Even if a person lead a fascinating life, I'm not sure if I'd actually pick up their book. I think they just remind me too much of textbooks, spitting out facts, without much of a story. That's an awful generalization, I know, but I have yet to find a biography that'd really catch my interest. I'm totally open to suggestions though!

Let me know what genres you all avoid with links in the comments and I'll check them out!

  1. I have a read a few memoirs but they were more of stories instead of just facts. But most of the time I'd have to agree with you that they are like text books. New follower!

  8. New follower! :-) I really like Chelsea Handler's "biographies." Although they are more like a collection of random, hilarious things.

  9. Thanks for stopping by - happy to return the visit (and the follow).

I agree, biographies or memoirs can be a bit dry, but once in a while I'll stumble across a good one.

  11. I usually lean towards memoirs...especially ones with either a touch of comedy or that read more like fiction!

  12. Old follower returning the visit! For some reason, I can read biographies but not autobiographies. It's like the person has to actually be deceased and be discussed by other people in order for me to want to read about their life. I have no idea why.

  13. I've read and enjoyed a few celebrity biographies. Other than that I pass on them also. Thanks for following me at Reading With Monie.

  15. I have read some biographies that were great and I have read some that were really boring. They are hit or miss with me, a lot depends on the writer. David McCullough does a wonderful job of bringing a story to life.

  16. I can't say I've actually tried any biographies. No interest at this time. Thanks for stopping by! Happy Friday! Reading to Penguins

  18. Hi, just stopping by from the FF. I'm a new follower. I don't like to read horror books, I'm just not into getting scared all that much. I 'm not a fan of biographies but if it's well written, I might give it a try (: Have a great weekend!!

  21. I agree! The only thing close to a autobiography (a memoir, really) I've ever read was Half Assed by Jennette Fulda and that was only interesting because she's witty and I laughed through the majority of the book. Returned the follow :)

  22. I love your layout! And I probably don't read any autobiographies or memoirs really either. I like fiction, and mostly with a fantasy aspect, since I read to "escape" from the monotony of real life.

I agree; I think it's great to learn about people who've come before our time, or even live during our time, but I don't levitate towards biographies :)

I have just finished reading the new biography on Stieg Larsson and really enjoyed it, but I think it was because it wasn't written like a real biography. But then i tried to read the new Cleopatra biography and just couldn't get through the heavy amounts of information. So I understand ya!

  30. i think it depends not the person you're reading the biography of. If it's someone you are interested in, you will enjoy the book, if it has no relation to you, then why would you read it? I've never read any myself to be honest.

great blog! I'm an old follower :) and thanks for visiting our blog!

  31. I definitely agree! I had to use a biography as a reference to write a paper once and ugh....never again! There's very, very few that I would be interested it. I definitely agree about the text book part!

  33. Hey!

Thanks for stopping by! I definitely agree; there was one point where I read 2 or three vampire books where it seemed like it was basically the same plot with just a few name and location changes!

I don't often read autobiography or biographies but I'm sure if it was someone I really wanted to learn more about, I would probably pick it up!

  37. Some biographies and/or memoirs I imagine are interesting, although I've never read one yet but I won't avoid them or scratch them off my to read list, because not everybody lives a boring life lol .

Have you tried "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"? I'd call it psuedo-biography. I suggest it because of you hold a masters in cellular and molecular biology. It tells the story behind the woman whose cells were the first "immortal cells". I have NO interest in science to be honest but I LOVED the book.

  55. I've picked up one about Christopher Reeve and one about Michael J. Fox years ago and both were okay. It wasn't I like them or not. It made me reflect on that these individuals went through and all. But I don't think I'll be buying another biography any time soon. Have a nice weekend. :D Thank you for visiting my blog again.

  56. Hey! Thanks for following! I'm not much of a fan of autobiographies/biographies either. The only one I've ever considered reading is Steve Jobs, but I still haven't picked it up. I'm really not sure if I ever will.

  57. I can deal with autobiographies if they are not celebrity related. I have no interest in anything an actor, musician or socialite has to say. Maybe if it's an author or historical figure.
